Danny Li

Danny is a 42-year-old husband and father of two young children, aged 7 years old and 1 year old. Originally from Liaoning (a province in the North-Eastern region of China), he and his family have been living in Canada for eight years.

On July 10, 2014 while playing badminton with friends, Danny began to feel ill with persistent fever. He went to see a doctor for further testing. Within a week, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Danny is currently undergoing chemotherapy. However, the only way for him to recover is to have a stem cell transplant as soon as possible, within the next few months. He has only one sibling, a younger sister who resides in China. She was tested to see if she might be a potential stem cell for Danny, but was found not to be a match for him. As Danny is a Chinese, his matching donor will very likely be of Chinese background also. Yet, due to the underrepresentation of potential Chinese donors in the global stem cell registry, Danny has a hard time finding his match.

Luckily, in early 2015, Danny was able to find a matching donor. Danny, we wish you the best of luck!

There are still many patients in need of a matching donor. If you are of Chinese descent, You could be the match for Chinese/Asian patients in need! If you’re 17-35 years of age with provincial health care coverage, please register as a stem cell donor now at: Canadian Blood Services and please help us spread the awareness! If you’re not 17-35, please help us spread the word and encourage the eligible individuals to register to save a life.
